Description

Although we at Custom Cage Works build many styles of Breeder cages for the Chinchillas, this is by far the most popular of them all. In fact, it is so popular that it is considered our standard Breeder Cage. Others can be built as a custom order using your specifications.

This cage has so many features it is hard to mention them all. It can be bought in 4, 8, 12 or 16 cage versions. Various height stands can be bought to accommodate the various number of levels. If one was to start off with a two level cage (8 compartments) and bought a stand with legs about 24" tall, and later bought a second two level cage to stack on top of the first, the legs on the stand could be cut with a hacksaw to 6" and still be used for the resulting 4 level cage (16 compartments).

The pictures shown here is of a 4 level version (16 compartments) with wire dividing walls. Most of our customers request the dividing walls be solid galvanized metal so the neighboring animals cannot fight or be distracted by each other. There is no difference in the price for wire dividers or for solid dividers.

Of course the dropping pans are the 4” deep sliding style, allowing the chins to live on shavings rather than wire.

Notice that on the back of each level is a tunnel for the male to be able to go from cage to cage to be able to visit his four females at will. There is a pass-through from each cage to the tunnel for him to come and go. There is also a pass-through shut off provided for each compartment. The females are restricted from going into the tunnel by means of an aluminum collar (not included with the cage, but available from CCW). When a female has babies in the cage with her, be sure to block off the pass-through so they do not go into the tunnel and possibly into another female’s cage. Also notice that under the tunnels, we have two sliding dropping pans per level. This keeps the debris and droppings from making a mess while the males are in them. You have to move the cage out in order to clean these pans, but this is easy with the use of our angle iron stands on casters.

Each compartment is 15"x24"x15". Therefore the 4 compartment unit is 60'x24"x15". The 8 compartment unit is 60"x24"x30". The 12 compartment unit is 60"x24"x45". And the 16 compartment unit is 60"x24"x60".

This cage provides a very efficient way of raising your chinchillas. It is a completely safe cage for them from the standpoint of the correct wire, living on shavings, keeping the babies safe from the other adults, and cleanliness. It is also very efficient in the use of the males. Only one male is necessary to serve 4 females. This does not overwork the male, but cuts down on the cost of feeding and caring for more males where you need a male for each female. It is also very good for utilizing the good genetics of your best males to breed with more females.

Add a built-in hay rack to the front of the cage. Chinchillas need roughage, usually in the form of alfalfa hay. Our rack is built into the front of the cage, so you just push a handful of the hay into the rack via a hole in the outside of the cage. They pull and eat the hay through the wire rack, and most of the spillage occurs within the cage. They then can eat the spillage at their leisure.
