Rabbit Cages

CHEEK'S CUSTOM CAGES builds and offers for sale a great variety of cages for Rabbits. Most of our rabbit cages are built of 2"x1" 14gauge galvanized wire, with the floors being made of 1"x1/2" 16gauge galvanized wire. Only the best quality welded wire is used in all of our cages. This is important because there are many wire suppliers that have very inferior wire. Most of the places that sell extremely cheap rabbit cages use one of these brands of low quality wire. The cheapest wire available is Chinese wire. Not only is this wire not strong, and the galvanized coating not durable, but the spacing of the wire welds are not consistent and often the welds are not well penetrated. The resulting cage is not a bargain. It won't be very attractive and will not give near the life of a cage that is properly built out of good wire. Our wire is made in the USA and is triple galvanized. Over the last several years we have found the spacing to be very accurate and the welding very strong. The resulting cages are both attractive and will give great service.

High quality wire is only the start of a good cage. What you do with that wire is what determines the value of the final product. There are many factors and details that go into a well built rabbit cage.

  • Our cages are assembled with heavy galvanized c-clips that are applied by means of pneumatic guns that double wrap the clips tightly around the two wire panels. This makes the cage very tight and strong, and the c-clips outlast the J-clips that many others use. J-clips are very thin and easily rust through.

  • The cut wire panels also must be straight and true. The wire used in most cages is supplied in 100' rolls. The pieces that are cut from the roll must be straightened by some means. CHEEK'S CUSTOM CAGES straightens its wire on special roller machines we have built specifically for that purpose. Cages built of wire not properly straightened look like balloons. All of the panels will be curved. Since the walls of this cage will not be straight, the cage will be weak because it has no integrity.

  • The door to a rabbit cage is a little different than the door for many other animal cages. Rabbits are fairly strong and can push on a door until it springs or stretches the latch. Many rabbit cages are hung or stacked, and if a rabbit on an upper level compromises his door, he/she may fall out and get hurt or escape, or this same situation may be the reason for losing an entire litter. Our doors are hinged at the top, and swing inward and upward. It is impossible for the rabbit to push it open. When the door is in the open position it can be held open by means of a door hanger latch that is installed on each cage. The door itself is also strengthened in our cages by means of a 9gauge smooth wire frame attached to the perimeter of the door. Finally, the door opening in the wire panel is a very important feature. The cheap and easy way to treat the opening is to just cut out the wire. This leaves sharp edges that invariably scratch and cut the caretakers arms while working on the rabbits. This is commonly called "Rabbit Cage Rash" and believe me you don't want it. Many things have been tried in order to overcome this problem. Some cage builders do nothing, others add pieces of plastic that snap on over the edges around the door. This looks good at first, but the rabbits just chew on it and pull it off. Others add metal guards around the door opening. These are usually attached by means of rivets. Since these are not easily removed and replaced, they are a great place for dirt, food, and vermin to collect. Our method for solving this problem is very effective, but is labor intensive. Since we do not believe in cutting corners on quality, we go to this extra trouble. Instead of cutting the wires flush with the door opening, we cut them about 3/4'" long and then bend them tightly over the edge of the door opening. The result is a door that you can rub your forearm around on and not get cut or scratched. And finally, our door latch is both simple and very secure.

  • The sliding dropping pan needs to be made of a good quality & heavy gauge metal. Our dropping pans (they can be outside dropping pans, or sliding dropping pans) are made of triple galvanized metal. The sliding pans have a convenient handle so you don't have to put your thumb in the dirty pan in order to slide it out for cleaning. Stainless steel dropping pans are available as an option.

  • Finally, a cage is no good to you unless it meets your specific needs. Cages bought from CUSTOM CAGES will meet your needs because we are willing to make any modifications you require, and we will even be glad to quote and build special order cages if none of our standard cages meet your needs.

CHEEK'S CUSTOM CAGES offers breeder cages, show carriers, single cages, folding cages, multiple cages, outdoor hutches, attractive indoor pet cages, custom order cages, and walk-in rabbit enclosures. Many options are available such as sliding pans, outside pans, baby saver wire, PVC coated wire floors, 14gauge galvanized wire floors, cage litter guards, leg sets, hay racks and stainless steel litter guards and pans.

Whether you are a pet owner, a hobby breeder of show or meat animals, or a large breeding facility, we would love to get to know you and quote your projects for you. All of our products are of the highest quality and we know you will be a satisfied customer. Give us a chance to prove it.
