PVC coated wire is a great wire to work with and is our choice for many animal cages. In fact, for almost all animals except hook-billed birds, and rodents (both of which love to chew), it is the wire we recommend. The coating will not deteriorate, and can stand up to sunlight, cleaning chemicals, and the general wear and tear of normal cage use.
Some of the advantages are as follows: The wire will not rust, even in outdoor use. It is very easy to clean. A pressure washer makes it look like new. The welds are molded together so there is no tight weld point where hair, food, vermin, and other debris can accumulate. This is especially important for show animals where you do not want the hair to get caught at the welds and break or get pulled out. Many of the USDA inspectors are insisting on breeding cages for many animals to be built of the PVC coated wire due to its cleanliness and for the health of the animals being housed.
Another great advantage is that a well made cage built of PVC coated wire, while being more expensive, will outlast the same cage built of galvanized wire many times over. Many of our repeat customers rave about how well their older cages, bought from us years ago, are holding up, and that they still look as good as when first purchased.
C.E. Shepherd’s welding process begins with steel core wire of varying gauges and then it is welded on state-of-the-art loom welders. This advanced technology guarantees virtually error free welding each and every time.
The PVC coating process begins by chemically cleaning the galvanized wire once the mesh is welded. Next a specially engineered primer is applied to the prepared surface. Finally, the cleaned and primed mesh is powder coated with their exclusive formulation of PVC powder coating which is fuse bonded to the core wire. The process prevents the infiltration and migration of moisture between the core wire and the PVC coating. This extends the useful life span of wire an estimated 5-10 times over “galvanized only” wire.
The PVC coating is available mostly in black. However, the 1”x1/2” in 16 gauge is also available in green and red in the 18” and 24” widths. The 1”x1” in 16 gauge is also available in green and red in the 18” and 24” widths.
